Today we travelled further north to Jaffna the centre of Tamil culture. On the way we took a detour to stop at THALAIMANNAR PIER which is where the ferry’s arrive from Southern India only 35 kilometres away. Here we dipped our feet in the Indian Ocean it was so refreshing to feel the sea on our feet and the breeze on our faces. Further on we did a short visit to a legendary Hindu temple before finally reaching our destination of Jaffna. It was a long journey but certainly worth the drive. The highlight of our trip to Jaffna was the experience of visiting a local Tamil home where we enjoyed a cooking demonstration and tasting of the seafood and vegetables. The young son of the family left Jaffna during the height of the war and travelled to the west. Afterwards when peace came upon the island he returned to his homeland and is now accepting tourists into his home to share his culture. Another highlight of the afternoon was a treat of savouring the best ice cream in the whole of Sri Lanka.
